ON LEADERSHIP: By Joey Curran
I lead in a very democratic way according to Leadership and Management as a Professional concept. Democratic leadership allows all employees of a business no matter what position or how much you are being paid to participate in the company’s performance. I prefer to challenge employees by getting them involved in all areas of decision making, instead of placing one authoritative leader to make and carry out all decisions. Therefore managing employees would be easier, knowing all decisions have come from the staff. Ultimately giving the staff a sense of ownership in the company and making it worthwhile to strive for excellence on a daily basis.

After taking the “Leadership & Followership” style test, I discovered that both my leadership & followership styles are categorized as “Mixed”. I believe that this score interpretation is accurate of the way I lead and follow because I like to be part of balanced decisions made. This is a beneficial way of leading because it is one that allows the concerned group to freely share their ideas equally. Furthermore, I believe that this style of following is a well-balanced style with relying on teamwork as well as being fully capable of working independently.

As a leader the ability of getting and giving information is most important. The leader ought to be the group member whom the other members select to coordinate their activities and to represent the group to the rest of their organization.

Discipline is important in an organization. A leader should be a role-model to the subordinates to be effective & functional. Having a leader in an organization whom other members elect plays a viable role in coordinating leadership, their activities and to represent the group to the rest of the organization. I learned that people do the best job when they are allowed to exercise self-control because people are responsible for themselves and no one else. It is necessary for the leader to effectively communicate to the subordinates in order to relate the tasks to be done, to know ways how tasks can be accomplished.

Senior 09

I am known to be mixed, boss suggests ideas and consults groups, many exceptions to regulations, mixture of above and below, I would think that is totally true, I am a very independent person but equally dependent as well. I am a team leader and love to help others if they need it. And I hope it goes vise versa. I usually have goals by the end of each day and expect to finish it by the end of the day hopefully. I don’t like to argue or get into conflicts that are non-negotiable, because to me that just means the other person is not listening or does not care about my feedback. Communication is a key factor to getting things done on time and appropriately.

My score for my leadership test suggest that I am a “mixed” type, in which I make exceptions to regulations and consult groups. I find this to be far off the mark. I have been in many management positions. I rarely, if ever, make an exception to the rules. Me and my team always follow everything through to the letter. I do this because it makes both me and my team the most efficient group in an area. I personally cannot stand inefficiency. If the machine has a single weak spot, the machine will break down, ruining our efficiency. By immediately acknowledging our faults and where we can improve, that enables me and my team to become efficient once again. I rarely consult groups. Allowing total group discussion will eventually promote a system that has free floating rules and expectations, ultimately slowing the group down, breaking morale down, and confusing the hierarchy of leadership. My style may sound ruthless, and at times it can be when something is not working correctly, but it does encourage and transform any team of workers into a highly efficient, cohesive unit that will get any job done.

My follower score was also mixed. Again, I disagree with this. I am sociable when I need to be, but typically I prefer to work alone as much as possible. I like to be given an order from a boss, and I will make it happen, no matter what. The only time I will not follow through is when the order goes against company policy, seriously violates ethics, or is illegal. I do like to participate in collaborative groups. It helps me make sure I’m not overlooking something or if I may be approaching the situation from the wrong angle. Once I know what I am to do, I make it happen. I enjoy finding my own way to make the job get done, no matter what.

The leadership and followership test help me understand the many different styles of leaders and followers there are. That you can be a leader and also be a follower. On my test I received a score of 2.9 which placed me on the mixed description which is both a leader and a follower. I can accommodate considering the circumstance or situation that I or we might be going through. I can take charge but also can stop and let someone else take charge when needed. I can function well with groups but also work well independently. This is a great attribute because you involve everyone and gain people’s trust, which helps when u need to lead and be leaded.

I think I am both a leader and a follower depending on the circumstances. I can be autocratic if warranted like giving discipline to subordinates. A leader needs to be tough and firm on his decisions, never allowing himself to flip-flop. But I can also bend strict rules to accomodate problems and opinions of members. Delegation for me is an important function of leadership as long as there is a system maintaining accountability and responsibility. I am open to suggestions beacuse I want to be heard too. Bottom line is the bottom line, at the end of the day and if the tasks are performed, I could care less if I was the leader or the follower.

I feel that I would be a participate leader. I think I could set some rules for my coworkers that would allow them to be flexible and give them their own freedom and responsiblities. I also think that I would always want things done early which could not be conceived by my coworkers as a good trait; I have a tendency to repeat duties to coworkers so they complete their task. I also get nervous when ordering people around cause I feel like I don't have authority over them especially cause of the age factor; I feel like I shouldn't order someone that is double my age even if I was in a position with more responsibilitties and authority.

After reading Chapter 9 and taking the leadership and followership test in the Leadership and management text book I realized that I am a “mixed” leader and a “moderately participative follower”. I feel being a leader is a dynamic task and can not be overly ridged. At the same time a lack of discipline and guidance as a leader could also lead to disastrous results. As a follower I am an independent worker that requires constant positive feedback from my leader and group to assure I am adhering to our mission.
